The Hipster Priest Turning Heads (and Hearts) in Spain

Padre Damián - published on 05/20/16

“Story of My Life”

I want to share the story of my life with the world: a precious story, one with times of crying, laughing, guessing, and making mistakes.

He’s been labeled “the hipster priest” by Huffington Post. His name is Fr. Damián María Montes, and he is a Redemptorist priest and missionary in Madrid, Spain. Following in the footsteps of others like Sister Cristina in Italy and Fr. Rob Galea in Australia, Fr. Damián appeared as a contestant on Spain’s edition of The Voice. Needless to say, the judges were shocked when they turned their chairs around to behold a Catholic priest. One of the coaches, Alejandro Sanz, after declaring himself Damián’s biggest fan, asked the priest to hear his confession.

Following his run on The Voice, Fr. Damián released a music video with his band The Beats: a cover of One Direction’s “Story of My Life.” On his Facebook, the priest shared the reason for his choice of song: “When I heard the song a while back, I knew that a version of this song would be the beginning of another great adventure! I want to share the story of my life with the world: a precious story, one with times of crying, laughing, guessing, and making mistakes. A story that has coincided with other interesting stories…The story that God dreamed up for me, and that, despite many, many difficulties, has made me immensely happy.” Keep up with the latest from Fr. Damián on Facebook.
