They use historical research to create “authentic” chant.Psallentes is a Gregorian chant ensemble. Founded in 2000, the group consists of 5 male singers and director Hendrik Vanden Abeele. Abeele also founded Psallentes Femina, a female counterpart to Psallentes.

Psallentes specializes in Late Medieval and Renaissance plainsong. Since this era revolved around sacred music, most of their repertoire consists of Mass settings and related polyphony.

The group gathers evidence on how music was performed in the era it was composed. Hendrik Abeele has conducted extensive research on the subject at the University of Leiden. The group applies this greater understanding to create “authentic” as well as more present-day interpretations.
