It’s Gilligan’s island … but with dogs! It’s Gilligan’s island, but with dogs! Or at least the rescuers thought so, inspired by the television series to name the island-dwelling puppies after characters on the show. The litter of seven puppies was discovered abandoned and malnourished on an island in northern Manitoba, and rescuers have gone to great lengths to ensure their safety.

Local fishermen were drawn to the island by the sound of crying and whimpering. When they arrived on the uninhabited island, they discovered the seven Lab mixes, malnourished but otherwise unharmed. The fishermen quickly notified Norway House Animal Rescue, who sent a team to collect the dogs, which they say are doing well. Debra Vandekerkhove, the director of the rescue, said, “[The dogs have] actually turned out quite a bit in 48 hours. No broken bones or anything like that that we can see.”

Humans go to exceptional lengths to care for dogs in a way that we don’t usually see for other species. Perhaps it’s their unwavering affection or their playful spirit that wins over our hearts. Some have even said that a dog’s love is the closest thing they’ve experienced to the unconditional love of God this side of heaven. With the amount of joy that dogs bring to our lives, whether it’s as a pet, as a service dog, or as a reading tutor for kids, it’s no surprise that we’re willing to return the favor and rescue those in need.

It isn’t clear how the dogs came to be abandoned on the empty island, but rest assured they are safe and soon to be ready for adoption.
