As Lent approaches a new contender emerges in the competition for Friday night dinner. As the Lenten fast from meat on Fridays approaches, one fast-food company has come up with a clever way to sell its new fish sandwich.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is offering “insurance” for its flounder sandwich. If the flounder doesn’t suit customers’ palates, then they can replace it with chicken. The Cajun-seasoned flounder filet, which will be a contestant on our upcoming fish sandwich review, is expected to be a staple of the Popeyes menu for the six weeks leading up to Easter.

The insurance option is only available on Thursday, February 18 (and only when purchased through the Popeyes app). The idea is that those who are going meatless on Friday can test out the flounder on Thursday. Since no one would want a fish sandwich replaced with chicken on an abstinence day, they are only offering the promotion for one day. The insurance costs 15 cents, which should still keep the sandwich under $5.

To introduce this new campaign Popeyes released a video, featured above, that parodies GEICO’s “15% or more” commercials. Of the new sandwich, Sami Siddiqui, president of Popeyes, commented:

“After seeing the response to our Chicken Sandwich in 2019, we are excited to deliver yet another delicious sandwich to our fans that is sure to reset industry standards … At Popeyes, we don’t take shortcuts on quality and strive to ensure our ingredients are the best of the best.”

Along with the new flounder sandwich, Popeyes offers several shrimp entrees, making it an excellent Friday stop for a whole family. Last year, Popeyes was not featured in Aleteia’s fast-food fish sandwich comparison, but this year it will surely be a main contender.
