World Youth Day 2027 will be here before we know it, and the Archdiocese of Seoul, South Korea, is already hard at work preparing to host the world’s largest gathering of young people. Myeongdong Cathedral recently hosted an evening of unity between bishops and the laity called “Camp at the Cathedral,” gathering some 600 young adult Catholics to discuss the coming WYD festivities, as well as methods of bringing the flock together.
The event was held under the theme “Do not fear: I am with you” (Isaiah 41:10), in the yard behind the cathedral after dark.
On hand were Archbishop Peter Soon-taick Chung, Bishop Job Yo-bi Koo, and Bishop Paul Kyung-sang Lee, who actively participated in the discussions and interactions.

Beer and snacks
A note from the press team of the cathedral reflected that the night was unprecedented, as it was the first time they had ever held such a large-scale event in the cathedral’s yard. Tables were set up and snacks were served along with beer, and each group’s table was arranged so that at least one clergy member, religious sisters, or WYD volunteer sat with the young people and engaged in discussions.
The night saw four keynote speakers address the crowd, and each one was followed by group discussion.
In his heartfelt speech, Archbishop Chong expressed his gratitude for all who attended the evening as well as their honesty and willingness to participate and share their experiences. He commented:
“It was a precious time to hear the stories of your lives. I am grateful to the young people for their valuable time. We will continue to organize various gatherings to share stories with you as the protagonists,” he said, before quoting Pope Francis: “God loves us just as we are, no matter what we accomplish or who we become. May you experience through the WYD preparation process that God is always with you in your joys, sorrows, and hurts.”
As an opportunity to listen to the voices of young people, “Camp at the Cathedral” was deemed a rousing success. The event is expected to pave the way for more such innovative and interactive gatherings, accelerating the journey towards WYD Seoul 2027 and beyond.
The Archdiocese expects its community to only grow closer in the coming years as they continue to prepare to host expected crowds in the millions, in just a few short years.
