The joy of socks: Diocese auctioning off George H.W. Bush’s socks at fundraiser

Want a piece of footwear history?  Here’s your chance. The press release:

Thanks to President George H.W. Bush, a one-of-a-kind piece of history from Super Bowl LI will be auctioned off at the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland’s Harvest Ball at the Holiday Inn by the Bay in Portland on Friday, October 20.

In February, President Bush performed the Super Bowl’s ceremonial coin toss alongside his wife, Barbara, before the opening kickoff. The president has donated the patriotic socks he wore and a color photograph of the moment featuring both his and the first lady’s autographs. The winning bidder will also receive a personalized letter of congratulations from President Bush. In recent years, the president’s love of colorful socks has been noted when he wears them during public appearances.

The game that followed the coin toss included the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history. Trailing by 25 points in the third quarter, the Patriots rallied to beat the Falcons, 34-28 in overtime. It was the Patriots’ fifth world championship.

The Harvest Ball, which is sold out this year, is an annual event that helps sustain Harvest, the magazine of the Diocese of Portland.
