In the spirit of turning our hearts toward God, here are 10 thoughtful acts of kindness to do this Lent.

“What are you giving up for Lent?” This common question gets the perfect answer in a sweet new children’s book, Louie’s Lent

In the book, a little boy named Louie can’t think of anything to sacrifice for Lent. Instead, he does something kind and thoughtful for someone else every day of the Lenten season.

The book gently makes clear that the purpose of Lent is not proving our self-discipline but turning our minds and hearts toward God. We aren’t just giving up something, but gaining an increased focus on serving God and others.

One of the goals of Lent is almsgiving, and freely giving our time and effort is one way to fulfill that mission. In the spirit of turning our hearts toward God, here are 10 acts of kindness to do before Lent is over. (Check out the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation for more ideas!)

1Be kind to your server

WAITRESS

Have you heard of “The Waiter Rule”? They say that how someone treats their waiter at a restaurant says a lot about them!

2Call a friend you haven’t seen in a while to say hello

A catch-up conversation will bring a smile to you both.

3Write a positive comment on a website or blog

KEYBOARD

Most of the time, writers and content producers only receive negative comments. Why are people so much more likely to comment if they don’t like something than if they did? We’re not sure, but we'd be delighted to read and respond to your positive comments on our Facebook page!

4Text someone you love good morning or good night

Let them know you’re thinking about them in the quiet moments of your day.

5Donate online to a cause you care about

There are so many worthy causes! Choose one and make a donation today; don’t put it off.

6Ask a senior to share some stories about their past

The gift of your time and attention to an elderly person is a beautiful way to respect and honor them.

7Give a friend an inspirational book

Whether you choose a spiritual classic or another book that changed your life for the better, giving it to a friend makes a positive and lasting impact.

8Send a handwritten letter

When was the last time you received a thoughtful note via snail mail? Your letter will surely be appreciated!

9Bake cookies for a neighbor

A homemade dessert is the best kind of surprise. It’s a great way to build community in your neighborhood too!

10Send a thank you card to your local librarians

A library is such a wonderful part of a community; it provides so many resources and makes a big difference. Take a minute to jot a quick card or email to your library director and thank your librarians for all they do!
