"I have You in My Heart," a popular track on his new album, speaks of finding "life after death."

The Christian recording artist TobyMac met with Chris Connelly on Good Morning America recently to discuss his new album Life After Death. The Nashville-based musician, whose career spans several decades, was candid about how many of the songs on the album reflect the tragedy he suffered in October 2019 -- the loss of his 21-year-old son Truett McKeehan to an accidental overdose of amphetamines laced with fentanyl.

TobyMac recounts receiving the news of his son's death while on tour -- the shock, disbelief, and lengthy grieving process that followed. He expressed that while his son's death "rocked his faith," he decided to trust and wasn't disappointed. TobyMac said, quite simply: "[God] was kind."

Religion News Service reports that TobyMac said the evening before the new album was released, “God has been kind enough to show me that there is life after death.” He admitted to the small gathering: “It’s hard to even say because I almost at times don’t want life. I think I’m cheating somehow on my son. But somehow or another I’ve learned that God is good.”

TobyMac's tragic experience serves as a warning to be vigilant in the fight against illicit street drugs; the US death rate associated with such substances is precipitously on the rise. The grieving father expressed his opinion that his son's death was the result of a deadly mistake rather than an ongoing addiction
