Holy similarities, Batman! Here's how some of the Church's holy men and women have qualities that can also be found in some of our favorite superheroes.

A recent story of big brothers dressing up as superheroes for their little brother made us think about superheroes in general, and their virtues. As some of these were very closely linked to the those of the saints, we thought we'd have a little fun and create some superhero-saintly pairings.

The results are below. What stands out is that the matches remind us that heroism isn’t just about superpowers—it’s about courage, faith, and the willingness to do what’s right, no matter the cost. Whether in the pages of comic books or the lives of the saints, these qualities continue to inspire us all.

(We've only selected six well-known superheroes, but why not chat about this with your kids and ask them if they agree, and to suggest saints with other superheroes they love. And we'd love to hear about the results in our comments section!)

1Spider-Man and St. Francis of Assisi

Why they're a perfect match:

Spider-Man, aka Peter Parker, is famous for his motto: "With great power comes great responsibility." He’s a hero who cares deeply about using his abilities to help others, even when it’s tough. St. Francis of Assisi, though lacking in spider powers, embodies this same sense of responsibility. He gave up a life of luxury to serve the poor, care for the sick, and even preach to animals.

Just as Spider-Man swings through the city helping people, St. Francis moved through life helping all of God’s creatures, showing us that true heroism comes from humility, service, and love.

2Superman and St. Michael the Archangel

Why they're a perfect match:

Superman, the Man of Steel, stands as a beacon of hope, justice, and protection. He uses his superhuman abilities to fight against evil and protect the innocent. This aligns beautifully with St. Michael the Archangel, who is known as the great protector and leader of the heavenly armies.

St. Michael is often depicted wielding a sword, vanquishing the devil, much as Superman fights to rid the world of evil. Both are seen as mighty defenders, standing up for what is right, protecting those in need, and using their strength to combat darkness.

3Wonder Woman and St. Joan of Arc

Why they're a perfect match:

Wonder Woman, the Amazonian warrior princess, is known for her strength, courage, and commitment to justice, especially in defending the helpless. St. Joan of Arc, the "Maid of Orléans," shares these warrior qualities. Joan was a young woman who, guided by divine visions, led the French army to victory during the Hundred Years' War.

Both Wonder Woman and Joan of Arc defy the expectations placed on them, stepping onto the battlefield with fierce determination to fight for what is right. Their bravery, leadership, and dedication to a higher cause make them a heroic pair.

4Batman and St. Thomas More

Why they're a perfect match:

Batman, the Dark Knight, is a superhero who relies on his intellect, detective skills, and unbreakable moral code to fight crime in Gotham City. He’s a figure who seeks justice and operates according to a strict ethical code, often in the shadows. St. Thomas More, the renowned English statesman, and martyr, similarly stood up for his principles even in the face of great personal risk. He’s known for his unwavering commitment to his conscience and his faith, famously choosing to die rather than compromise his beliefs.

Both Batman and St. Thomas More demonstrate that true heroism lies in staying true to one's convictions, even when it’s difficult.

5The Flash and St. Paul

Why they're a perfect match:

The Flash, known for his incredible speed, uses his powers to be everywhere he’s needed, always racing to save the day. St. Paul, one of the most important figures in early Christianity, could be considered the "speedster" of the Apostles. After his conversion, Paul traveled extensively, spreading the Gospel far and wide at a pace that would make even The Flash proud.

These two travelers are driven by a mission to help others and to spread a message of hope, whether through super-speed or spiritual fervor.

6Iron Man and St. Ignatius of Loyola

Why they're a perfect match:

Iron Man, aka Tony Stark, is a genius inventor who uses his intellect and technology to become a superhero. He undergoes a profound transformation from a self-centered billionaire to a hero dedicated to protecting the world. Similarly, St. Ignatius of Loyola started his life as a soldier focused on worldly glory, but after a transformative spiritual experience, he became a “soldier for Christ,” dedicating his life to God and founding the Jesuits.

Both Tony Stark and St. Ignatius use their talents—whether it’s technological genius or spiritual insight—to make the world a better place, proving that true greatness comes from a change of heart and a commitment to serving others.
