How to turn your post-vacation blues into a fresh start

Daniel Esparza - published on 08/19/24
The climb back to routine may seem steep at first, but it’s a path that can lead us to growth -- especially if it is rooted in our Christian values.

The end of a vacation often brings a mix of emotions. While we cherish the memories we’ve made, there’s no denying that we sometimes return more exhausted than when we left. The hustle and bustle of travel, the excitement of new experiences, and even the joy of family gatherings can leave us needing a break. But as we face the return to work, study, or the usual routines, we also face a good opportunity for renewal –a chance to start anew with a refreshed perspective.

Returning to daily life after a vacation can feel a lot like starting a new year. Just as we make resolutions and set new goals each January, the post-vacation period invites us to do the same. It’s a moment to reflect on what worked well before our break, what didn’t, and how we might do things differently. This sense of renewal can provide a powerful boost to our ambitions, encouraging us to take on new projects, set realistic goals, and perhaps most importantly, renew our commitment to our faith and values.

Embracing the new

This process of renewal is deeply rooted in our Christian understanding of life. We are called to continually renew our hearts and minds, casting off the old and embracing the new -- no one pours new wine into old wineskins. While the transition from vacation to work may seem daunting, it’s an opportunity to realign our priorities, refresh our spirits, and find new ways to serve God and others with renewed vigor.

The climb back to routine may seem steep at first, but it’s a path that can lead us to growth –if done properly. By leaning into this transition, we can rediscover our ability to renew ourselves. Whether it’s setting new goals at work, strengthening our relationships, or deepening our spiritual practices, the post-vacation period can be the perfect time to rekindle our energy and enthusiasm.

As we settle back into our routines, let’s embrace this time as an opportunity for a fresh start. By God’s grace, we have an infinite capacity to renew ourselves –one step, one day, one prayer at a time.
